Therapy Office

Our philosophy.

We believe that therapy is an active healing process that requires participation and investment of our time, energy and skills. Making small changes to self-defeating behaviour and coping with feelings of sadness, fear, and pain can bring transformative life-altering results.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of evidence-based psychotherapy that was originally developed by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan in the late 1980s. It was initially designed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) but has since been adapted and found effective for various mental health conditions and emotional regulation difficulties. DBT has shown considerable success in treating a range of mental health presentations including mood and anxiety disorders, trauma, perfectionistic traits and significant life stressors (i.e., parenting and/or workplace stress), among others.

Its emphasis on skills training, mindfulness, and validation makes it a valuable therapeutic option for individuals struggling with emotional dysregulation and interpersonal difficulties.

DBT combines elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with concepts from Eastern mindfulness practices. The therapy is grounded in the belief that some individuals have a heightened emotional sensitivity and difficulty in managing intense emotions, leading to impulsive behaviors and strained interpersonal relationships.

The term "dialectical" in DBT refers to the balance between acceptance and change. Therapists encourage clients to accept themselves and their emotions while also recognising the need for change to lead a fulfilling life. The integration of acceptance and change strategies sets DBT apart from traditional CBT approaches.
